The parakeet is a ubiquitous symbol in Indian textiles and Charlotte’s research for her design looked closely at the complex relationship between colonial Britain and India. Take a look at her essay regarding Gandhi’s visit to a Lancashire mill at the height of the struggle for independence.

The beautiful Parakeet Pyjamas were produced by Real Handicrafts and Parmar Tailors. The pyjamas are printed with natural dyes on unbleached khadi, a hand-woven cotton. As well as being good for the environment (with only natural ingredients washing back into the soil) natural dyes are gentle on the skin, perfect to wear whilst sleeping. Find out more about natural dying in our story by Elinor Gallant.

All the India Street Bazaar products will arrive packaged in handmade cotton paper, screen-printed in India. Find out more about the paper making process and the Happy Pen factory’s relationship to Ghandi’s Ashram in Ahmedabad in Charlotte Linton’s story.
